Color Trends: Sage

When Ashley and Dino Petrone and their family took a vacation on Anna Maria Island in Florida, little did they expect that it would change their lives. After several upscale RV renovations, the nostalgic island inspired the Petrone’s to take on their next project.

By chance, they found a four suite motel in need of some TLC and fell in love with it. Before the vacation was over, they secured the property and moved in two months later to begin remodeling. The entire family got involved and six months after that, the renovation was complete.

They decided to call it Joie Inn. Joie (pronounced “jwah”) is French for joy and it perfectly describes how they felt about the project, and how their guests feel about visiting. Take a moment to look behind the scenes with us. Especially when it came to picking colors, this project was inspired from the start.

Guided By Color

The story of Joie Inn is also a story about color. In fact, color was where it all began. Anna Maria Island is defined by bright, beachy colors bathed in the warmth of colorful sunsets nearly every evening. This is what inspired Ashley as she considered the design of each of the rooms in the motel.

She chose vibrant but cozy colors that represented an updated island vibe and accented everything with a crisp white. The result is a modern color scheme that stays true to the island’s history and roots.

The Sage Room

This second-story room of the inn has two bedrooms, 700 square feet, and overlooks the pool—and it’s an oasis of peace. It features a sage green color that reflects the rolling waves of Anna Maria Island.

In The Sage Room at Joie Inn, you’ll find this comfortable color covering the bed or spanning the backsplash. Dashes of it are everywhere from the wall decor to the throw pillows.

Why Sage?

Sage is a trending color with staying power. It, and colors like it, were named color of the year in 2022 by Minwax, Better Homes & Garden, Benjamin Moore, and Sherwin Williams to name a few.

Though it’s the color of the moment, it is a color that will always have a place on the neutral color palette. It’s just enough gray and just enough green to work well with any color and not draw attention to itself. Yet it can hold its own against other neutrals.

Warm colors are what it’s all about these days. Everyone craves the coziness of warm colors and the solidarity they bring to design. Though sage is founded in gray and green (traditionally cool colors) it has a sense of warmth, comfort, and the easy-going vibe that Anna Maria embodies.
