Cheap or Elegant: Do You Really Have to Choose with RTA Cabinets?

Price and elegance are two of the most important aspects when it comes to purchasing cabinets. People want cheap cabinets that look great and stand the test of time, but don’t want to spend an arm and a leg. We all want the best deals, but we don’t want to sacrifice quality. People go back and forth for hours trying to figure out how to get both, but there are some easy tips and tricks you can use to get what you want. The key is understanding how cabinets are made and how you can use that to your advantage.

Looks Don’t Always Mean Quality

You may think you’ve hit the find of the century when you get cabinets that look amazing, but cost less than anything else you’ve seen. If you’re looking for something elegant and sophisticated, but find it at a low price, then it’s probably made out of particleboard. Particleboard is made up of small wood chips and sawdust that are glued together and pressed to create the furniture. They look just like their sturdier counterparts, but will begin to fail faster than the rest. If you want elegance and low price, then this is the way you want to go. But, be prepared to have to make repairs and other improvements to your purchase within a few years, as they tend to degrade quickly. An alternative would be cabinets made of plywood or solid wood materials, however, they cost more money.

Go for a Less Custom Cabinet

You’ll find that cabinets can come in three types: stock, semi-custom and custom. Stock cabinets provide the least variety, and come in common measurements; semi-custom cabinets allow for some customization; and custom cabinets are fit specifically for your kitchen. As you might guess, custom cabinets cost the most because they are fit exclusively for your kitchen. Stock and semi-custom cost less and give you the same elegance and styles of custom. The downside is the cabinets may not fit your kitchen exactly, but you’ll get elegance and a good price. There is no sacrifice needed.

RTA Means Lower Price

If you’re considering RTA or pre-assembled, then keep in mind that RTA will cost you less money and give you the same elegant looking cabinets. Pre-assembled cabinets cost additional money to assemble and ship, but RTA cabinets are simply stacked and you provide the building labor. There is some time required to actually assemble the cabinets, but they are created to fit together easily and come with all the parts needed. You just have to have the manpower and the tools. Someone with a working knowledge of tools and assembling furniture can put a small unit together in about 10 minutes. There’s no reason why someone should ever have to pay for assembled cabinets again.
