Free Kitchen Design FAQs

How do I accurately measure my kitchen for new cabinets?

Use our measuring tool above for step-by-step instructions. Otherwise, start by sketching the layout of your kitchen and labeling each wall. Measure the full length of every wall, from corner to corner, then measure from the floor to the ceiling in multiple spots to check for variations. Mark windows, doors, gas lines, plumbing, and electrical outlets. The more details you capture, the better your design will turn out More details here

What tools do I need to measure my kitchen for cabinets?

All you need is:

  • Tape measure (preferably at least 25 feet)
  • Pencil
  • Graph paper or printable template
  • Level
  • Smartphone or camera for photos

Bonus: A laser measurer can help with precision.

How do I measure for upper (wall) cabinets?

Measure the distance from the floor to the ceiling, then subtract the height of your base cabinets and countertop (usually around 36"). This tells you how much vertical space you have for wall cabinets. Don’t forget to account for the space between the countertop and bottom of the wall cabinets—typically 18". Get full details here.

How do I measure for base cabinets?

Measure from the floor up to where the countertop will sit (usually 34.5" for the cabinet box, plus 1.5" for the countertop). Measure the wall length along the floor and mark any appliances or obstructions like vents or outlets. Step by step instructions here

How do I account for appliances when measuring?

Always include the full width, height, and depth of your appliances—fridge, stove, dishwasher, and microwave. Leave extra clearance for doors and ventilation. If you're buying new appliances, use manufacturer specs for planning.

What are standard cabinet sizes?

Base cabinets: 24" deep, 34.5" high
Wall cabinets: 12"–24" deep, 12"–42" high
Tall/pantry cabinets: 84", 90", or 96" high
Widths range from 9" to 48" in 3" increments.

At RTA Cabinet Store, our design team will tailor sizes to fit your exact space.

How much space should I leave between cabinets and appliances?

Leave at least:

  • 1" to 2" between cabinets and major appliances
  • 36" clearance for walkways
  • 42"–48" if you have an island or two-cook layout

Proper spacing ensures smooth workflow and accessibility.

How do I measure for corner cabinets?

Measure the length of both walls from the corner out. For L-shaped or U-shaped kitchens, note obstructions like pipes, bulkheads, or radiators. Corner cabinet options (like Lazy Susans or blind corners) require precise planning—our free design service can help with this.

Can I measure my kitchen myself, or should I hire a professional?

Most DIYers can measure their kitchen with confidence using our guide. But if you're unsure or dealing with uneven walls, hiring a pro or using our 100% free kitchen design service adds peace of mind.

What common mistakes should I avoid when measuring?

  • Forgetting to include trim, baseboards, or molding
  • Not checking for level floors or ceilings
  • Ignoring obstacles like vents, pipes, or soffits
  • Estimating instead of measuring
  • Skipping photos or documentation

Avoiding these helps ensure your design—and your installation—goes smoothly.

What do I do after taking all the measurements?

Upload your sketch, measurements, and any photos to our design portal. One of our expert designers will create a 3D layout and help you choose cabinets that fit your vision—and your space—perfectly.
