But when it comes to particle board vs. plywood and\/or solid wood, does the slightly lower cost of particle board cabinetry <em>really<\/em> save you money? First let\u2019s take a look at the three common types of wood used for construction in cabinetry.<\/p>\n<h2>Particle Board Cabinetry<\/h2>\n<p>Particle board is composed of wood particles (read: sawdust) that are combined with glue and resin in a high-pressure mold, to create \u2026 well, let\u2019s just call it a \u201cwood-like substance,\u201d shall we?<\/p>\n<h3>Particle Board Pros<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cheap \u2013 Because it\u2019s basically made out of what is generally considered a waste product, particle board tends to be cheaper than the other wood options. How much cheaper? Usually around 10-20%. This is because it still costs money to mix with resin and glue, and to build and apply the molds.<\/li>\n<li>Warp-Resistant \u2013 Because there is no continuous grain whatsoever, particle board is nearly as resistant to warping as plastic, so you\u2019ll know that your particle board cabinets will always be the same shape. Or will they \u2026?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Particle Board Cons<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Poor Water and Heat Resistance \u2013 Particle board has many small particles of wood that, over time, as they swell and contract with moisture, humidity, and heat, can degrade its structural integrity more rapidly than the other wood options.<\/li>\n<li>Poor Damage Resistance \u2013 Screws will strip more easily, veneers can peel off as the particle board swells and contracts, plus it\u2019s less resistant to chipping, scratches, and other surface damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Solid Wood Cabinetry<\/h2>\n<p>Solid wood is exactly what it sounds like: someone cut down a tree, and sawed it into lumber, which was then used to build cabinets. Or, much more commonly, it\u2019s used to build door panels and accents for cabinets.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Well, because first off, solid wood is the most expensive option. For cabinet frames and other parts that are rarely, if ever, going to be seen by anybody, it\u2019s simply a waste of money. For doors, especially more complex designs, however, it can be far superior to particle board or plywood.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s another reason, aside from cost, that solid wood is rarely used for the body and sides of cabinets: susceptibility to warping. Solid wood warps over time. It just does. Various types of treatment can limit this, as can using wood that\u2019s much thicker than is otherwise needed, such as is often done in furniture, but eventually, given enough time and variations in moisture and temperature, wood just warps. For cabinets that often hold hundreds of pounds of expensive and fragile objects\u2014that\u2019s bad!<\/p>\n<h2>Plywood: The Goldilocks Option<\/h2>\n<p>Plywood is formed by cutting wood into very thin, flat layers. These layers are then glued together so that the grain of the wood criss-crosses. While this may not be quite as pretty as solid wood, or as cheap as particle board, it has certain advantages over both.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Highly Warp Resistant \u2013 Because the grain runs in a variety of directions throughout the depth of the plywood, any warpage will be working against the warpage of the other layers. This means it\u2019s nearly as warp-resistant as particle board, and far superior to solid wood for cabinet sides and frames.<\/li>\n<li>Superior Ability to Hold Fasteners \u2013 Screws, nails, tacks, and even glue hold better in plywood than either particle board, which has low structural integrity, or solid wood, in which the weakness caused by the aligned grains can lead to splitting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtacabinetstore.com\/RTA-Kitchen-Cabinets\/\" target=\"_blank\">RTA Cabinet Store<\/a>, most of our lines of kitchen cabinetry use some combination of plywood frames, and solid wood drawer boxes, rails, and doors. Not only does this save you money compared to entirely solid wood construction, it\u2019s superior to it as well, in many ways.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s possible you could save a little money by sourcing particle board cabinetry, the higher possibility of stripping screws and damaging them during assembly and installation might end up costing you more, even in the short-term; and in the long-run, there\u2019s simply no comparison.
